The Piano – Part 2

As I mentioned in Part 1, I had decided to become a professional pianist.

However, my stint at the boarding school and the divorce of my parents, destabilised and confused me.

Although I had a wonderful piano teacher at boarding school (it was the only nun who was nice to me), I was disoriented  about life.

I had many unanswered questions.

a. Why was I sent to boarding school 10 minutes away from where I lived? It was of a religion I had never heard of.  My father was an aetheist, my mother wasn’t practising anything. I only got into that school because of a friend of my parents.

b. Why was Mother Superior (the headmistress) always nasty to me. She used to say that I was a sinner as my parents were both divorced from previous marriages and were now separated to be divorced again.

c. Why did I have to kneel daily in the Chapel at 5.00am whatever the season? Reply was always, because I was a sinner.

Once in the outside world, I decided life was going to be on my terms. I knew that it would upset my mother terribly if I didn’t play the piano, so I STOPPED for a few years.  And so, my standard deteriorated rapidly. Can you imagine the pain in my heart from that decision? I loved the instrument.

I still play today but infrequently as I never achieved the standard I had reached in the early years.

If YOU have a passion for something and had stopped for whatever reason, when you recommence …

Be kind to yourself, be loving to yourself and take it slowly.
You will get back into it.

Video to come……….
Me, now, experimenting with my iPhone playing 2 minutes of “La Paloma”, “The Dove”.

It’s a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was written by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier around 1860 after a visit to Cuba.

Let’s talk about You

Let’s talk about YOU

I know, you’ll have FUN with the following. I had a wake up call when I did it.

Write the answers to the following statements in full and keep them available for future reference. The exercise will have a great impact on your life going forward.

It’ll show how you’ve changed over time. We learn best by making something a personal experience.

We spend HOURS and we expend much ENERGY on all sorts of things in a day that don’t really add value to our life.

For example,

  • Gossip, nasty stuff
  • Spread hearsay about people, even if good
  • Are judgmental of ourselves and others
  • Relay news items whose reliability is dubious
  • Repeat news items other than what’s uplifting
  • Complain about a plethora of topics in our life
  • Repeat ourselves unnecessarily

Reply to the above statements as they relate to you.

What did you learn about yourself?

You would also have observed some of the above traits in people you know, wouldn’t you?

These are merely observations and not meant to be judgmental. The observation is between you and you, not to spread. We often see traits in others but not in ourselves and learn from this.

It’s a good idea to revisit this exercise every six months or so as it’s easy to slip back into ingrained societal programming.

Are We One?

Are we One?

Well, I’ll dive straight in. Many people have faith in some higher power, whatever you choose to call IT. IT has lots of names from personifications to energy Vs matter.

You may have had unexplainable experiences. You may have had spiritual realizations. You may have had none of these. That’s fine, this and other such discussions, will still be interesting and relevant.

One aspect remains though, whatever you put out, at some point, you’ll get, to varying degrees at varying times.

Let’s get a bit more concrete. When you are any of the following on a consistent basis, your reality will illustrate the same in your life.

In other words, if your modus operandi is

  • loving, caring, considerate, thoughtful, respectful, joyful, truthful; you keep your word, your commitments and so on, or
  • gossiping, bad-mouthing, being mean, cruel, cheating, complaining, lying and so on

You’ll attract more of the same. Your internal world will be reflected in your outside world.

It’s not a case of being “perfect”. It’s about being a true human being as we were designed not the flawed one created from an outside environment that has lost its way.

Some call it Karma, others, the Golden Rule or whatever else you’ve heard/read. Again, for our purposes, what it’s called, doesn’t matter.

There’s an old Chinese proverb, “Rather light a candle than curse the darkness.”

My personality creates my reality.

A bit about Me

A Bit About Me
I’m a visual artist. I paint acrylic abstracts ofttimes with glitter, fluorescent and metallic paints. There is usually a strong focus on the metaphysical. I express my personal interpretations of consciousness and emphasise the beauty and wonder of my experiences in the spiritual and earthly space. My painting aim is to have an overall effect that is vibrant, forthright, and inspirational for the viewer. It oscillates between bold impact and sensual gentleness.

I don’t allow myself to be imprisoned by the traditionally accepted. Like YOU, I’m an original, and experiment with and explore innovative colour combinations while retaining the integrity of each colour.  For me, the role of colour is to create atmospheric connections between the visible and invisible worlds. In addition, I use abstract interpretations to represent the natural world which cannot be contained as it is always changing in subtle nuances.

The Past
I was a featured artist in a gallery at Mt Tambourine, Queensland, Australia. Although my careers have been in the academic education and mentoring genres, I’ve always loved self-expression whether in the creative arts, dancing/movement, or music.

I’m self-taught as I don’t follow instruction well. I began painting in earnest in 2003. My works range from small to extra-large, whatever size, colours and style takes my fancy at the time of painting.

When I get the urge to paint, I go down to my Atelier, select colours that I’m led to, and away I go. Rarely do I start with a project in mind, I let what’s inside flow out; I don’t stand in its way. We all have an internal inspiration radar if we would only listen to it. It took me months to understand this. I would get frustrated until I relinquished control and let “spirit” take over. Powerful and exciting stuff.

The Present
My goal has always been to enable everyone to feel comfortable to express themselves in whatever creative endeavour sits at their core. With this in mind, I currently assist with encouragement lessons of inspiration with those who request it.

The Future
My work will be available in physical and digital forms for download. (See the Menu Bar for options on how to acquire which form appeals to you when available)

Music

I didn’t know that music in its generality existed until I was about 10 years old. The people we boarded with had a pianola, which if you used the pedal, produced melodies from a reel of paper in a little cabinet above the keys that had indentations which produced the melody. The keys would go up and down in keeping with the melody, you just sat and watched/listened. The melodies were usually sing-alongs and everyone just sang to the melody. No skill was required

The other migrants had various instruments which were part of their culture but, I didn’t link that with “Music”. They were mostly used when the variety of nationalities joined up in public parks and danced and barbecued.

A few houses up from where we boarded lived an elderly lady (Mrs Cran) and her adult son (Arthur). He had a health condition and all day he sat in a chair and listened to the gramophone player and listened to records.

Everytime, I went there, I heard these sublime melodies. I asked his mother what it was, she told me, Classical Music. I had never heard of that before. He could only speak for short periods before he gasped for breath and collapsed with exhaustion. I was introduced to Mozart, Beethoven, Bach,  Handel, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, to name a few.

I used to go there as often as my parents allowed after school, and on weekends. One day I went, and I saw Mrs Cran crying. She told me Arthur had died. He’d had a stroke. Apparently, he had extremely high blood pressure and, in those days, the doctors didn’t know what to do about it.

I had never experienced someone dying that I cared for. I couldn’t believe, I would never see him again, nor listen to music with him, or taste Mrs Cran’s cakes. She always baked a fresh cake for me.

Not long after, we left the area as my parents had bought a house .

You and Me

All of us have an internal desire to positively express ourselves, it’s evident in our speech, our actions and in the life we create.

As you create your life, you are a creator, therefore, you are creative. This site has you in mind.

Oh, I can hear many of you saying: “I can’t paint to save myself” or “I’m hopeless at painting”, or something to that effect.

Let me tell you that, prior to 2002, I would have said the same.  You will say, “That’s about 20 years ago.” Yes, but let me set the stage about my age. If I were wine, I would be priceless. 20 years ago I was already  in the “very mature” category”.  My actual age is immaterial otherwise, I would tell you; it has nothing to do with being a painter or a happy human being.

In 2002, I was going through a very dark period, in spiritual terms it’s called, “The dark night of the soul”, more like “dark years of the soul” but noone, except possibly a family member, was aware of that.

Out of nowhere, during this period,  I had the desire to paint. Since I was about 10 and I was told by a family member, a drawing of a horse’s head I had done and was proud of, was TERRIBLE, I had never touched drawning, painting or anything of the type for 40 years. It never entered my head.

In 2002, I suddenly had this incredible desire to paint. Where did that come from? Well, some would say, “divine intervention” or, INTUITION.

The desire was so strong that I went to Bunnings, a massive hardware chain and asked the man if he could build me a simple easel. It was in the days when such add-on services still existed. He did, on the spot, there and then.  It wasn’t collapsable but, I had a station wagon. You don’t see these cars around anymore.

I drove home, placed my easel in the carport. I had bought cheap paintsbeforehand. I had inherited brushes from my mother’s deceased partner who was a professional in oils and, with many rags as support, I was ready to create.  I used abstract painting paper, about 35 cm x 15 cm. I still had no idea what I would do.

All I knew was, open a paint tube, squeeze some on paper, play around …………and about 3 hours later……..I had a completed painting. I stood back and exclaimed, “Holy Moly, I did that?” Needless to say, I did abstracts, I could just let loose with colours and whatever took my fancy. To my surprise, I sold a few as well.

I was also asked to be the guest artist for a gallery at Mt Tamborine.

This lasted about 5 years.  My professional career took a different direction and I travelled within Australia and then the US on business and so, painting had a break till 2018.

3 of my framed earlier works:

  1. Corals, using rice paper beneath
  2. Crab in Cave
  3. Ferocious Fish

Reading

Reading

Reading mind expanding, reliable, reputable and enjoyable material DAILY helps create and expand your life. By life, I mean in every area, mind, body and spirt. 47 books are listed with a couple of authors having books in a series so, counted as one book.

They aren’t all an easy read first time around, but an enriching one and get easier with rereads. As you enjoy them, you’ll also grow from the challenge they present.  At least, that’s how it’s been for me.

To gain the most from your reading, it requires commitment to regular reading. If you can only read a few days a week and not daily, that’s fine but, keep to that number, don’t slacken off, if possible.

You can often purchase them for a good price through online bookstores and, you’ll also get a synopsis of what the book is about and reviews. The authors are in alphabetical order. Some are novels to just enjoy, some books are metaphors for aspects of life, others are “text bookish”.

Certain books, I’ll simply choose for instant pick-me-ups..  A few I found in second-hand bookstores. I love browsing through them.

The Piano – Part 1

Music

  1. The Piano – Beginning
    Part 1

A slight introduction is necessary.

In 1952, I arrived with my parents in Australia. That is 7 years after World War II ended. All I had seen till then were bombed cities, bombed countrysides and many dead bodies.

First Australian port was Fremantle, then Adelaide, followed by Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane. You can imagine my surprise when nothing was destroyed here. This was followed by the long, slow train trip to Townsville where the person lived who guaranteed for us to arrive in Australia.

We stayed there a year before moving to Brisbane. Now, building a life started in earnest. We boarded with a family before my parents bought a run-down house that needed massive renovations.

No one had any money so, all the migrants exchanged services as house repairs were needed, roof repairers, plumbers, concreters, electricians, my parents did their own painting. and so on. People grew their vegetables in their back yards and joined consortiums to buy other foods cheaper in bulk.

When I was about 12, my mother decided I should learn the piano. Up the road from where she had her dressmaking shop/business was a piano teacher, an elderly lady. Once a week I would go there for a lesson. She was strict and often hit my knuckles with a ruler when my hand position was not to her liking. But I liked her, and I grew to love the piano.

After 4 years, my father regraduated from medical school and could earn money, and so my mother closed the shop. My father had been a doctor in Europe, but Australian law dictated that all such professionals had to redo their studies.

I was sorry to leave my piano teacher, but my love of the instrument was cemented for life.

Fast forward

As a result, by the time I was 16, I had decided that I wanted to be a professional pianist when I grew up. I went to the Music Conservatorium to engage in advanced study. My teacher and I strongly disagreed in many things. Also, my home life had become a friction factory, no one got on (they soon divorced) and, I decided, I didn’t need another source of friction with my piano teacher.  I was then placed into boarding school.

The photo above is me at the Steinway Showroom in 2011 in New York. Physical tours no longer are offered but, you can do a virtual tour if you follow this link.

Introducing Wisdom

Please read and internalize:
Everyone is born with the potential of Wisdom within them. No exceptions.
Please remember this whenever doubt or frustrations appear.

However, just as with all the other great attributes of our body and mind, if we don’t nourish them with foods, fluids, thoughts and actions that are beneficial – we’re not going to develop them in the way intented.

That is, for the greater good of ourselves and humanity.

Simple, yes. Easy, no.
We need to put the effort into making our life the way we want it to be.
_____________________________________________________________

You can read umpteen books on any field of interest and gain its knowledge and, that’s exactly what you’ll get, knowledge only, fact or fiction. This is important to be aware of. This is not Wisdom.

Many people have opinions based on minimal knowledge. Even if they have read or watched multiple videos, etc on that topic. Unless they have cultivated the desire for Wisdom, they are unlikely to broaden their research.

In today’s world of amazing technology and open source information, this trap is deeper than ever.

The attainment of Wisdom will be illusive.  Wisdom is instrumental into living a fulfilling life with minimization of stress factors. Stress factors are simply things that push our buttons.

Humans have an amazing brain, innately unlimited in its capacity to understand and absorb information.  Wisdom, however, comes from being discerning and putting empowering knowledge into your daily life,  experiencing the consequences and, learning from them.
